Top 10 Biggest Wedding Trends You Can Expect to See in 2022

3 December 2021

After everything we have been through in the last two years, engaged couples who are finally getting married are looking forward to a big 2022 full of guests lists, packed dance floors, and memories with loved ones. A new year means a fresh perspective on weddings and with that comes new trends.

Couples are aware of how precious shared time with family members and friends are, and want their weddings to be a celebration of this. Not to mention a celebration of all the things that COVID denied us to do over the past two years.

From Bridgerton-inspired weddings to earthy colour palettes, and offbeat entertainment, there is a lot to be excited about with next years weddings trends. After all, what’s the point in having a normal wedding when there is no ‘normal’ anymore? Here is our list of the biggest 2022 wedding trends to get you enthusiastic for the year ahead.

1. Bridgerton-inspired weddings

Since its debut on our screens in 2020, everyone’s obsession with this hit Netflix series has not slowed down and 2022 is set to welcome the hotly-anticipated second series. A trend that people are getting excited about is Bridgerton’s dramatic Regency setting with the romance and whimsy of the cottagecore aesthetic. There will be subtle touches that people throw into their weddings such as empire-waist weddings dresses, pops of blue pastels, handwritten notes and afternoon tea with vintage china tablescapes. 2. Virtual wedding invitations

With couples having to change their wedding dates constantly over the past two years, virtual wedding invitations have grown in popularity. Even though a physical invitation can never be replicated virtually, they are ideal for the modern, tech-loving couple as they can accommodate last-minute changes, and can be more budget-friendly and sustainable (which is a theme you’re going to see throughout this list)

3. Intimate weddings

More and more couples are now taking the less traditional approach and wanting a more intimate wedding with just a select guest list full of close friends and immediate family. Most couples are planning weddings with 50 or fewer guests. Not to mention it’s a great way to save the bank account and this is one of the main reasons couples are opting for an intimate wedding. Money saved here can go towards luxurious honeymoons or saving to buy a house. Seasoned work with a range of intimate venues which are perfect for your special day. 4. Unusual entertainment

People want their special day to stand out in people’s memories, and they’re doing so with unusual entertainment. Many couples are turning their receptions into adult playgrounds with beer pong, axe throwing (be careful with that after a few bottles of champagne have been opened), bouncy castles and drag shows! Couples are taking the opportunity to rewrite weddings and do things a little differently by bringing out their personalities more – which is exactly what is needed after such a difficult period.

5. Two-piece and rented wedding dresses

Brides are constantly searching for something new and different and two-piece wedding dresses are just the thing. It enables you to mix and match to suit your taste and they can be easily transformed throughout the day. Add an overskirt for the ceremony and change to trousers to dance away to the reception. The versatility makes for effortless possibilities, and their re-wearability is a major plus for brides who are sustainable conscious.

It’s not uncommon for grooms to rent their outfits, so eco-conscious brides are now following their lead. Hiring a dress means designer brands are more accessible at a smaller cost (the perfect solution to those who love labels).

6. Anniceptions

During COVID we saw a lot of postponements, downsizing and virtual wedding ceremonies, promising a larger get-together later on. An anniception is a second wedding celebration that poses as an extension to your original wedding date. Couples will still cut the cake, have their first dance and enjoy all of the wedding traditions that they desire, just without the ceremony beforehand. This trend has been born out of COVID, but it’s one that we see continuing for years to come.

7. Back-garden weddings

Another trend that has been caused due to COVID, backyard weddings are becoming popular as couples are wanting to embrace the use of open-air venues due to being locked inside for the past two years. Even though back-garden weddings involve a higher planning workload and may limit you to the warmer seasons, they are a perfect opportunity to host your wedding in a unique setting and you can party as long as you like! You can learn more about the venue partners that Seasoned work with here. And the back-garden wedding trend segways perfectly into our next trend…

8. Earthy, natural colour palettes

Another point focused on the environment (and not the last). Many people have spent more time outside because of the pandemic and have a newfound love of nature. Experts are saying that couples’ décor colour palettes are moving more earthy and away from the whites and pastels of the previous few years. Think terracotta pots, driftwood and linen napkins, with neutral colours and pops of rust, amber and coral tones.

9. Eco-conscious weddings

Many have switched to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle during lockdown and there will definitely be more eco-conscious weddings throughout 2022 and beyond. From vegan wedding food to wine, to wedding decorations, couples are focusing on being more sustainable with their decisions and many wedding caterers are now accommodating their requests. More couples are wanting to be conscious of their choices in their day-to-day lives and this is now shifting over to events. Learn more about Seasoned’s sustainable approach here.

10. Getaway weddings

Getaway weddings are growing in popularity due to couples opting for smaller guest lists, they can have more flexibility with location. Again, with COVID restricting travel over the past two years, couples are seeing this as the perfect opportunity to travel while tying the knot. With travel now becoming a reality again, couples are looking to be adventurous with their locations, especially in Mediterranean cities in Italy, Croatia and parts of Spain.
